A major piece of infrastructure on the Northumberland Line has been installed over the A189 Spine Road in Blyth.
A new pedestrian and cycle bridge has been lowered into position across the dual carriageway, with a giant crane used to assemble and move the bridge into its final position.
Engineering teams worked around the clock over the weekend of August 3-4 to allow the A189 to be reopened as quickly and safely as possible.
The bridge, which is 50 metres long and weighs around 52 tonnes, will provide Northumberland Line passengers with a safe and accessible way to cross the busy A189 and hugely increases connectivity to the new Blyth Bebside station which will open next year.
Northumberland County Council Leader Glen Sanderson said: “This is the next exciting step on this fantastic project and brings us ever closer towards delivering the new passenger service.
“One of the key aims of the Northumberland Line is to encourage people to move away from their cars where they can and think about more sustainable travel.
“While the bridge cost £3.297 million it is crucial we make it as easy and safe as possible for people to get to the new stations before travelling on the Line.
“We’d also like to thank all those who were affected by the road closures over the weekend, particularly local residents, while this huge new structure was carefully installed.
“We endeavoured to keep closures to a minimum and re-open the Spine Road as quickly and safely as possible.”
